Reply with quote | #11 | Haha! Thanks, Rizal. Fyi, Tommy is anti-Tony. Hahaha! I do watch matches. It's only that most times Tommy choose not to see what I see. Heehee! Yes, you are right. We should bear no grudge against players we bought when they were already established. Who won't accept or look for a better offer elsewhere? They play for the money. Not for passion for the club like us fans who are one club men (and women). However we should feel royally pissed off if players we developed moved on. However, sad to say, they seem to play better at their new clubs. At least that's what I notice from those who have moved on, i.e. Benayoun, DeFoe, etc. Maybe it's our playing system. I think we were famous for playing the "West Ham way" developed by Ron Greenwood, who was already looking into continental football during the 60s. I think John Lyall continued with the system, but after that the successive managers had no clue what was our style. That's my take anyway. |

Reply with quote | #12 | If Zola thought Neill was a good leader surely West Ham should have paid Neill what Neill thinks he is worth. Obviously Neill thinks he is worth more than Zola thinks, so bye bye Neill

Reply with quote | #13 | Neil and various others were signed on an Eggy contract, financed by the banks. WHU can no longer afford to offer players Eggy-style contract, hence the sharp reduction in wages. I wonder how will Tony feel when he reaches 55 and his employers wants to retain his services but at 50% or 60% of his pay?? |

Reply with quote | #14 | If I continue, the Company will pay me 80% of my last drawn salary, I think. Not bothered too much about these things.

Reply with quote | #17 | Tony's got a point, I'm 55 and my boss still pays me the same wage................opps its me hahahaha!
Anyway, at 55, as far as I'm aware, isn't it the retirement age for Malaysians, even if you are fit and healthy? Maybe to accept 80% of your pre 55 salary is better than trying to get the top salary at a new company! well it's just my thoughts.
Same thing can be said about the old day footballers. The likes of Gentleman Trevor Brooking , choose to stay at the Hammers regardless. Even Harry the Houdini and Frank the wank hung their boots up at WHU. I'm afraid Lucas Neill will never be loyal to one club and I hope John Terry keeps his word and doesn't let money rule his future!!! |

Reply with quote | #18 | Hey Jim, kwai lohs don't retire at 55. If I am not wrong, your official retirement age back in UK is 65, am I right? So since you are only 55 you still have a long way to go.
In Malaysia, it's different. The official retirement age in the private sector is still 55 although the civil service is now 57 or 58. They said that the 55 retirement age was introduced by your ancestors, our colonial masters, as they wanted to retire early and go home to old blimey to enjoy life back there.
When I was 55 some years ago, I was lucky that my then employers kept me on for another 2 years on the same pay and terms and when I reached 57, they wanted me to stay on to train a successor but at about 80% of my pay with no additional benefits. This went on for about 8 months before I was shown the door. Luckily, I was quickly picked up by another Company but at lower pay. But after 9 unhappy and stressful months at the new Company, I decided to call it a day and quit without a job.
Then early this year, a friend invited me to join her Company at fairly good wages and I hope to stay here for as long as possible, considering that I will be pushing 60 years old soon.
Actually, loyalty works both ways. Should I be bitter with my previous Company for kicking me out at 57 2/3 and after having trained a successor for them or should I be grateful that they kept me on for another 2 years 8 months?
By the same logic, should WHU show more loyalty to Lucas Neil and offer him a better contract, say at 70% to 80% of his previous terms? Any one will be reluctant to accept a new contract at just over 50% of his previous terms and continue to do the same job (with the possible exception of Tony).
Remember history and what happened to Mooro? WHU show no loyalty and sold him to Fulham for 25k quid when they thought he's passed it. So don't talk about players loyalty, it works both ways.
